Causes of Slip-Fall Accidents
Over 50% of slip-fall accidents are caused by unsafe floor surface conditions. It is critical that businesses keep their floors clean and free of debris and liquids such as water than can cause slip-fall accidents.
The Law Today - Commercial Liability and YOUR Responsibilities
Now more than ever, facility
owners and operators need to pay close attention to floor safety.
When a visitor slips, trips, stumbles, falls and is hurt on your
premises, you should now expect that a claim will be brought against
you. Your have responsibilities under law as an owner or occupier of
your premises. An occupier is anyone with physical control of the
premises, including the conditions and the activities carried on
there.
Your responsibilities are
laid out in various occupiers' liability legislation adopted by most
Canadian provinces. In addition, case law has developed through
judicial decisions that further define your responsibility as an
owner or occupier of your premises.
Under law, you owe to your
visitors a duty to take care "that is reasonable in the
circumstances" to ensure that visitors are reasonably safe while on
your premises. In other words, for owners and occupiers, there is a
real responsibility to take active precautions to keep the premises
safe for visitors.
Coming into effect March 2004, Bill C45 makes anyone in authority – Supervisors, Managers, and Owners criminally responsible for a preventable accident.

WORLDWIDE MEMBERS
A Clean Floor is a SAFE Floor Our firm belief, echoed by most in the industry, is that a “Clean floor is a safe floor”. While this is true, there are a number of situations where the static coefficient of friction (SCOF) on the tile surface itself can be dramatically reduced to a level that is hazardous over a relatively short period of time (i.e. is more slippery under wet conditions). This drop in SCOF can be attributed to a wide range of issues such as: tile wear resistance and clean ability, surface treatments, cleaning and maintenance programs, normal wear, contamination from grease, fats, dirt, sand, salt, etc., cleaning chemical residues, and pedestrian traffic levels. Once the SCOF has been reduced to unsafe levels for safe walkway surfaces, either a rejuvenation or treatment process is necessary to ensure compliance – that is where our proprietary treatment and cleaning processes come in. Since most of the issues listed above are relatively difficult to control precisely over a period of time, we have developed a deep cleaning treatment process, our Cleaning and Rejuvenation System (CRS), that when used every 8-12 months (depending on pedestrian traffic levels) will clean and rejuvenate your tile floors and restore traction to similar characteristics as when the floor was initially installed, thereby returning their SCOF to a safe level for walkway surfaces. When you use our Clean Step multipurpose cleaner as part of your daily cleaning process, and rejuvenate your floors as recommended, we provide you with a limited lifetime warrantee. [Note: Accepted industry standards as adopted by Underwriters Laboratory (UL) and the American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM) define - “A static anti-slip coefficient of 0.5 or above is considered a safe walkway surface.” - under either wet or dry conditions.] For some tile surfaces, depending on age and other factors as above, cleaning will only improve the traction on the tile so far. For these applications, the only alternative to restoring the SCOF to a safe level is to treat the tile surface itself. Our Safe Solution Anti-Slip Treatment (AST) Process is a proven treatment process that was designed by the UBC Research to do just that – safely and effectively treat the tile surface to improve traction without impacting the tile’s appearance or functional performance. The treatment process is considerably less costly than replacing the floor surface and when combined with the proper cleaning chemicals (our Clean Step multipurpose cleaner degreaser and sanitizer), retains this increased traction for a minimum of 3 years, guaranteed. The cost of our treatment processes are typically less than an insurance deductible, and when combined with our Floor Safety Maintenance Program gives owners and operators peace of mind protection for slip-fall accidents at a reasonable price.
